OVERVIEW/SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The equine specialist position is responsible for maintaining the equines and equine facilities owned by Sierra Tucson. Duties include:
Schedule and be present for veterinary and farrier services.
Assess and prepare appropriate horse feed to ensure healthy diet for horses.
Order, pick up, and/or coordinate delivery of feed.
Work with other equine team members to support the well-being of the horses and residents.
Address and report to manager any horse injuries or horse health and/or behavior concerns.
Engage in training of horses to correct undesirable horse behavior utilizing natural horsemanship techniques, maintaining behavioral standards required for therapeutic activities.
Report status of herd to manager on a weekly basis.
Maintain a clean, presentable, and safe environment in the stable area.
Report and coordinate repair needs of fences, pastures, horse stalls, and barn to manager and assist in repair
Maintain documentation related to the horses and their care.
Attend company-wide mandatory meetings, regularly scheduled trainings, and weekly staff meetings.
Position may also involve assisting with facilitation of equine activities for residents, supporting residents with safety around the horses.
Position may also involve documentation of resident activities with the horses.
Position may also receive cross-training between other therapeutic recreation departments and be asked to help provide coverage for groups, lectures, and activities outside of equine.
High school diploma or GED
Minimum five years in horse training and herd management.
Ability to train horses using natural horsemanship techniques.
Ability to longe, clean hooves, groom, and perform basic horse care skills.
Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
Basic computer skills required.
Valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 75 lbs.
- Able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
- Good vision and hearing.
Maintain complete confidentiality in all patient/program matters, in accordance with facility policy.
Adhere to all policies and procedures relevant to the job, the department, and external regulating bodies or obtain approval for exception.
