DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Detention Education Teacher will plan and provide for the education of residents/inmates in correctional
facilities located within the Gila River Indian Community. The incumbent is expected to have experience in
curriculum development and implementation for a program that runs ?ve days a week (52) weeks year-round.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
0 Plan with the Detention Education Administrator curriculum for alternative education, vocational and life
skills programs.
0 Coordinate with local education programs as needed to provide continuous and appropriate student academic
and vocational programs.
0 Establish methods for on-going individualized student progress evaluations.
0 Develop and/or implement Individual Education Plans for residents/inmates each quarter they are detained.o Supervise teacher assistants in areas of academic and vocational programs and assist in the implementation
of all individual education plans.
0 Provide individualized classroom instruction to multi-level residents/inmates in a team teaching setting.
0 Provide leadership in design of curriculum, instruction and assessment in compliance with the Academic
Standards from the Arizona Department of Education.
0 Establish and maintain contact with parents on resident/inmate academic level when applicable.
0 Participate in the collection of data to maintain complete and up to date records of student work.
0 Demonstrate initiative in professional improvement through participation in continuing education and training
opportunities.
0 Provide and arrange for resident/inmate testing to determine educational performance to establish academic
levels in math and reading.
0 Attend staff meetings and confer with supervisor, present and resolve dif?cult problems or questions, discuss
plans of action when making decisions.
0 Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:0 Knowledge of the history and traditions of the people of Gila River Indian Community.
0 Knowledge of all necessary subject matter (Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Agriculture,Computer Science and GED studies).Knowledge of modern education theory and practices as it pertains to (reluctant learners) detained youth/ adult.Must not be addicted to the use of intoxicating liquor, narcotics, opiates and other substances of abuse.Ability to effectively plan, supervise and coordinate work of others.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.Ability to organize conduct effective classroom instruction and to motivate reluctant learners.Ability to provide individualized instruction at a variety of achievement levels.Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality.Ability to work with all staff in the organization to provide delivery of curriculum to all detained youth/adult.Ability to maintain effective working relationships with people of varied economic, educational and culturalbackgrounds.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in Education and a minimum of two (2) years teaching
experience to include supervisory experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Current State of Arizona teaching certification for elementary, middle and/or secondary (GED and/or Adult
preferred).Current TB skin test and current physical examination.Required to pass a background check and ?ngerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue
to maintain throughout duration of employment. Background checks are required for positions that involve regular
contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with The Indian Child Protection and Family
Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have
regular contact with the Elderly.Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B.
Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis.Required to obtain a Tribal Driving permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for
the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be
submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the
