Behavioral Interviews - Theresa Maher

As you prepare for your next job interview, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the different interview styles you may run into. In a traditional interview, which is the style we tend to be most familiar with, you will be asked about your skills, your interest in the organization and position, and your overall professional history. Preparing for a traditional interview requires researching the organization and becoming comfortable explaining why you feel you are the best candidate for the job.

There is another interview style that is becoming more and more common; the behavioral interview. This style is focused on using past experience to predict future behavior. So, the employer is trying to get a sense of how you would handle certain situations if you were hired. Here's an example: the interviewer may say, "Tell me about a passed work situation that involves a conflict you had to solve between two parties. How were you able to do so?" Here, the interviewer is interested in learning about a real life situation you experienced to see how you handle conflict resolution. When asked a behavioral interview question, you should always respond with real experience, not one you've made up. One of the worst things that can happen in your job search is ruining your credibility, which will most likely ruin your chance of landing a job.

You can never be sure what sort of situation the employer will ask about, so preparing for a behavioral interview can be a little difficult. Before any interview take some time to think back on situations where you have truly showcased your talents as a professional. This can be focused around leadership, conflict management, your ability to keep your cool under pressure, or any variety of traits you feel showcase your strengths as a candidate. Many times employers want to see how you will handle situations as part of a team, so be sure you are not only prepared to discuss situations where you worked individually. Thinking of past experience you can share with the recruiter ahead of time will take the pressure off of having to think on the spot.

With job interviews, regardless of the style you encounter, preparation is the key. Walk in with examples and experiences you can offer that will help position you as the best candidate for the job. You have a lot of great experience, don't be afraid to share it.

1. Follow companies that you are interested in and pay attention to their jobs, their values, and their accomplishments. Re-tweet and respond when appropriate (For example re-tweet news of a great accomplishment or milestone and be sure to congratulate them).
2. Share your search with your network (tell people what you are looking for). For example. "I am a graphic designer with 5 years of experience looking for a growing company to flex my web design skills. Anyone else looking for work in this field? Let's chat." Bonding together with other professionals in your field drastically increases your ability to gather leads and polish your portfolio and resume.
3. Share your resume and ask for feedback/leads. Use your JResume custom URL to share your resume with friends and tweeters. Openly ask for suggestions and leads related to your search. encourage people to pass it on to hiring professionals in your feild.
4. Send your JResume directly to Hiring Manager Tweeters when you know they have the right job for you. Respect their application procedure if they ask you to follow up with another application method
5. Search your desired job title in tweets - many job boards and companies tweet jobs, so you can use this as a custom feed.
6. Discover who they are and follow the top thought leaders/tweeters in your profession.
7. Follow Career Services/Career Coaches/Resume Writers to receive tips on-the-fly and keep your search fresh. 8.
When am I going to find a job? - Julie Armstrong

Recently a job seeker asked me - "it has been 6 months, what am I doing wrong - why haven't I been hired?". Sound familiar? Here is the good and the bad news: Unfortunately, the length of this person's job search is normal for today's economy. According to the BLS, the average job search currently lasts for about six and a half months (seasonally adjusted average) - http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t09.htm . Hopefully this number will decline soon as the economy recovers. It is important to persevere and stay active in your search.

How can you shorten your job search?
Nothing is a sure thing, but one good approach is to be as active as possible while you look for work. Volunteer, make new connections, and make sure you stay in touch with people that are engaged in helping you in your search. Here are great organizations that might need your support and connect you with other local professionals. It can be easy to get discouraged and withdraw from the activities that could help you most, so be aware of how you spend your time. In times like these, there are plenty of worthy causes that could use your talents. Giving can take you out of a negative spiral and give a boost to your self-worth.

Try something new.
If you've only applied one way, try another venue. For example, if you've only applied through job boards, also try applying via email with a professional letter of interest (using the JResume system makes emailing a resume as easy as copying and pasting a link). If all of your activity has been online, try branching out with an open house, job fair or networking event , local events. There are just so many ways to get a job - that you can increase your chances of success dramatically by adding at least one. Check the event calendar and our new resume system for new ways you can connect with employers and get your resume out there.

Put yourself on a schedule.
Set benchmarks and make a time-line. You may not be able to control when employers respond to you or if they hire you, but you can control the efforts you make. Set goals for time you will spend on your search, the numbers of jobs you will apply to, and when you plan to follow-up with your applications. Getting tasks set up and holding yourself accountable will help make sure that you keep your search in motion and don't get yourself stuck in the "waiting by the phone" rut. Check out local job clubs to gather more resources, support and accountability in your search.

Nearly everyone is using social media these days – your mom started Tweeting, your grandma is on Facebook. So if your company – especially your HR department – is not using social media, it's time to rethink your strategy.

That's what most people probably took away from the second annual Social Media AZ event, which was meant to help businesses understand and use social media. The event attracted many social media experts and professionals from local, national and international companies. Representatives from Intel, GoDaddy.com, Henkel, BusinessWire.com and IBM were among those in attendance.

One of the most attractive sessions was the Top 10 Social Media Trends for 2010, hosted by C. Edward Brice, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Lumension.

The top 10 trends include:

Social media will shift from technology to people – Company budgets will begin to shift toward social media as more people realize that “being social is about relationships." In addition, an array of new social media experts will emerge, as people are no longer interested in the how and why of social media, but what comes next.

ROI and social media – Companies will work tirelessly to figure out whether social media's return on investment should focus on the “social” or “media” aspect.

The long tail of community grows – There will be an explosion of niche social media communities, such as the recently-created eBay Neighborhoods.

The convergence of social-mobile – As mobile phones are expected to be the dominant Web-accessing device by 2013, we will see a quick combination of social media and mobile. Social mobile will be defined as the combination of social aspects, context and location awareness. This is already happening on some levels as evidenced by augmented reality programs, such as Yelp Monocle and Yahoo! Search for Mobile.

From CRM to social CRM – Companies will move from focusing on traditional customer relationship management to focusing on reacting to customers who reach out via social media.

Social gaming goes mainstream – There will be more engagement, contribution and content surrounding social gaming. Good examples of this are Farmville and Foursquare, both of which have become extremely popular.

Monetization of social media – Companies will begin to learn how to make money from social media. If a product is something people really want to talk about, it's most likely something they'll be willing to pay for.

The evolution of the marketing role – In today's world, 80 percent of your consumers find you, meaning social media can play a huge role in your marketing plan.

Security and data privacy will grow – As more people begin using social media for business purposes, more people will be concerned about the level of privacy social media sites are offering them.

Social optimization – Companies will combine many parts of their business plan, including social media, to create an online brand experience. Social media optimization will be combined with search engine optimization and search engine marketing to achieve that goal.

Another interesting session was Using Improv to Build a Genuine Online Presence, hosted by Jeff Moriarty, an enterprise social media expert who dabbles in many local nonprofit organizations and performs improv comedy.

He demonstrated how those looking to increase their online presence can use the same rules that apply to improv comedy when using social media. In both instances, creating a character, game and scene can make what you have to say a lot more interesting to your audience. In addition, focusing on spontaneous creativity and flexibility, and being able to adapt to situations is imperative to your success in both situations.

Other SMAZ sessions included: Social Media 101; Uncovering the Right Social Media Resources; Measuring Social Media's Influence Across Multiple Channels; The Cold Shoulder of Social Media; Social Computing: The Transformation of Collaboration; How to Use Social Media to Improve Your Search Engine Rankings; Picking Your Social Presence; Building Brand Evangelists with Social Media; 11 Must-Dos for the Serious Blogger; and Measuring ROI for Social Media.

There also were four panels, including a Q&A for professionals; Social Media for Small Business; Corporate Expectations and Your Social Project; and Metrics: Demystifying ROI & Social Media Measurement.
