Looking for a job-hunting advantage? Memorize this statement: employers want to hire and do business with people they know, like and trust.

If you’re a graduate of Arizona State University, the best place to find companies filled with people who know you is on the ASU Alumni Association’s Sun Devil-centric job portal, which is powered by Jobing.com. Many postings are posted exclusively to the portal, and many of the potential employers are looking specifically for applicants trained in ASU degree programs.

Here are the week’s top jobs:

GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER…
VOLUNTEERISM - A SWEETHEART DEAL FOR JOB SEEKERS & BUSINESSES
By Dr. Ruth Romano

Let’s face it. It’s easy and even somewhat understandable during a tense “wait-and-see” economy, for people to adopt self preservationist attitudes when it comes to their jobs or extending themselves to help others who may be in less fortunate positions. The tendency in many cases has been to pull in the reigns, close oneself off from distractions and try and preserve and protect what personal security might be remaining. This attitude, if not adapted to a, “all for one and one for all,” mentality, can lead to a downward spiral for the individual and the company – plus thwart new opportunities that might be waiting just around the corner.

You would think many would embrace the adage, “what goes around comes around.” And now, more than ever, if we find truth in that phrase, we should find it within ourselves to be ready to respond in any way possible to help our friends, associates and local business organizations weather through one of the most tumultuous times in our nation’s history.

But, where to begin? We suggest considering one of the greatest resources of today, volunteerism, as a means to helping others and helping yourself at the same time.

Volunteerism is like gold. It is a gift for all participants.

The need for volunteer resources has never been as vital as it is today. There was a time when organizations encouraged volunteerism to simply make people feel a part of the group and experience a sense of belonging to the organization that they had invested in. Today, volunteerism is much, much more. It has become part of a business’ or organization’s program of work and may even lead the list of necessary resources that will help achieve a company’s bottom line goals and objectives. Businesses and organizations are hungry today to welcome to their business ranks many invested, dedicated individuals as volunteers. And, they are more than happy to explore win-win scenarios with their volunteers in order to demonstrate their appreciation for their efforts. The beauty of the growing volunteerism phenomenon is that businesses and non-profits have the additional hands and brain-power needed to reach goals with low to no budgets. And, volunteers, particularly those looking for jobs or re-entering the workforce, have a helpful, gradual and educational way to test their likes or dislikes of certain fields or industries, plus, have the inside track on building much needed relationships, trust and credibility within their areas of interest.

In this highly competitive work environment, successful, consistent, and energetic volunteerism can be the key to securing the job of your dreams, over dozens, and in some cases, hundreds of other qualified job seekers.

Volunteerism is the way to go and truly is a “sweetheart deal” for all concerned.

One of the great myths about career networking is that it’s all about you: your needs, your career, how your network can help you. However, most people who are on the receiving end of that sort of approach won’t see what you’re doing as networking so much as they will see it as self-centeredness.

Job seekers who use networking to tap into the so-called “hidden job market,” or who leverage organizational contacts to make the most of applications to advertised openings, are able to do this because they understand one simple concept—reciprocity.

Debra Feldman, a nationally recognized executive job search consultant, explains the importance of reciprocity this way:

“Networking is about relationships and developing connections and a sense of trust … If you are the individual seeking assistance, look for ways to give something back. It can be a simple thank you email or voice message, a holiday greeting, an invitation to an event so you can get together again, a link that they might find interesting, an introduction to someone that you think they should know, etc. In other words, don't treat your networking contacts as "one off" /one-sided exchanges but incorporate them into your existing relationships.”

Doing All the Talking - Marnie Green - Management Education Group

On a recent cross-country flight I was seated in front of a gentleman who was highly intelligent, skillfully articulate, and utterly clueless. How did I know all this about the man who sat behind me? For the entire four hour flight he talked, and talked, and talked, and talked. I learned about calcium deposits, chemical formulas, countless medical studies, and how to best run the high-tech company from which he was recently fired.

His partner in this conversation was an unsuspecting college student. This I learned when they introduced themselves during the safety information presentation. I felt sorry for this poor, naïve guy. Every time I peered around to put faces on the voices of this one-sided conversation, I noticed the college student's eyes glazed over and a look of disconnect on his face. It appeared he was struggling through the long flight as if he was in an extended statistics lecture.

Why is it that some people have a need to do all the talking? With absolutely no inquiry into his partner's interests or needs, my talkative flight mate seemed to use the uninterrupted time to express his thoughts, frustrations, desires, and hopes to the stranger next to him. It was as if he gained therapeutic benefits from the monologue. And, in fact, he probably did complete the long flight feeling very good about the exchange.

In return, he likely missed out on learning much about his seatmate. I can't help but wonder where the conversation might have gone if he would have asked a few things like:

• What is your experience?

• How would you have addressed an issue like this?

• What is your opinion on...?

Have you had a conversation lately where you did all the talking? Where you didn't make the most of the question-asking opportunities you had before you? Talking can feel good--cathartic even. It can help us sort out our thoughts and clarify our intentions. But listening can be just as beneficial. In the midst of a talker, at least on an airplane, an iPod turned up loudly works too!
