Job: Coating Technician

Sion Power, the global leader in the development of a new generation of high-energy, rechargeable lithium batteries for portable power is currently searching for a COATING TECHNICIAN at its research and development facility in Tucson, Arizona. Sion’s exciting new technology is based on the elements lithium and sulfur which combined yield a battery system with the highest theoretical gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of any battery couple and offer significant improvements in performance over current rechargeable batteries.

This position will be responsible for conducting development work on mixing, coating, slitting processes and cathode formulation for Sion Power’s proprietary lithium sulfur batteries. Incumbent will be working with various types of equipment in a laboratory setting and also responsible for proper maintenance of laboratory equipment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Coordinates with engineers, manufacturing personnel and technical service personnel for development and scale-up of mixing/coating/slitting processes to produce coated components in support of company requirements.
• Working independently or in small groups, carries out assignments in coating process development and improvement for lithium sulfur batteries.
• Works effectively with engineering and manufacturing personnel to identify process issues in conjunction with collaborating on designing, carrying out, and reporting experiments.
• Inputs data to provide quality control, experimental record, and production documentation.
• Occasionally will review and analyze experimental data, compile databases and draw conclusions and recommendations.
• Actively demonstrates adherence to all Sion safety protocols.
• Evening or day shift work required; occasional travel may be necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:
• Associates degree in a technical field with two years experience
• Or (5) years work experience in the field of slurry preparation, coating and web slitting.

Skills:
• Must be computer literate with good verbal and written communication skills
• Practical mechanical aptitude (very hands-on)
• Understand process control.
• Experience with SPC a plus
• Should be familiar with mixing and formulation operation.
• The candidate should be able to organize, maintain and run milling/coating/slitting equipment


Physical Demands
To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the individual needs to be physically fit to work in the office and in a chemical laboratory, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds to chest level. The candidate will need to carry out work, and handle various chemical materials, in a chemical lab (open air and fume hood) with personal protection equipment (PPE, such as goggles, masks, etc.). Much of the lab work will require that the individual work in a dry room on a regular basis for prolonged durations (up to several hours at a time) more than half of the time.

Work Environment
To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, the individual will work in an office as well as in chemical, vacuum and dry room laboratories. The candidate will: work with PC's and other office equipment; perform basic bench chemical work in open air and in a fume hoods (sometimes with PPE); spend times (up to several hours at a time) preparing samples in a dry room; operate and maintain R&D vacuum coating systems located in a dry room (again, sometimes for several hours at a time); and, occasionally, work in the machine shop on minor construction projects.
