Jobing Description

Under general supervision of the Social Services Manager, performs professional social casework services relating to provisions and compliance with the Indian Child Welfare Act. Acts as the Health & Human Services (HHS) Department, Social Services Division point of contact and subject matter expert for social services relating to the Indian Child Welfare Act. Provides counseling and group services under MSW supervision. The Social Worker I (Indian Child Welfare Act) carries a heavy caseload with a higher proportion of difficult or complex cases compared to a Case Manager but not at the same higher level or complexity as the Social Worker II job class. Emphasizes work relating to compliance with the Indian Child Welfare Act & ensures the provisions of the Act are carried out in practice at SRPMIC. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Provides case management, support services and follow-up to individuals and their families. Refers clients to other resource agencies and programs including, but not limited to, Behavioral Health, Value Options, Parenting program and Health Services. Coordinates with other agencies to provide emergency assistance and resources to clients involving food, clothing, crisis intervention or medical services.

Applies knowledge, experience and understanding of the Indian Child Welfare Act and applies to cases involving Native American families. Ensures all federal and state laws regarding child welfare are complied with. Demonstrates the ability to work with tribal and state attorneys, state agency workers and others. Works with state and tribal court systems as required.

Makes home visits or visits to other settings to provide direct casework and case management services to individual and families. Provides ongoing assessment of families and is responsible for attending court hearings and writing court reports that reflect the progress of the families. Ensures court orders are being followed.

Maintains accurate statistical data using the computerized database for easy retrieval. Maintains current and comprehensive case files that include assessments, case plans and other case file documentation. Prepares periodic reports from records as required.

Plans and schedules activities such as medical appointments, counseling and parenting for client children and families. Intervenes in crisis emergencies including providing "on-call" crisis intervention assistance. Maintains regular scheduled office hours in order to be available to clients and other Community members.

Participates In training opportunities that will enhance job skills or knowledge of social work.

Participates in weekly staff meetings. Discusses issues or cases that require additional input and planning. Provides alternative solutions to Issues to ensure the greatest benefit for the clients in accomplishing the program objectives.

Investigates referrals of child abuse and neglect. Work closely with law enforcement and court personnel to keep them informed of family’s progress and legal status. Conducts collaborative interviews and contact all interested parties to gather information.

Attends professional development meetings and training as directed by immediate supervisor. Keeps professionally current with the field of social work.

Helps to maintain an environment within the Social Services Department that encourages teamwork, interdependence and ethical behavior. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental and program operations.

Skills / Requirements
A Bachelor's degree In Social Work or closely related area AND experience equivalent to one to three (1-3) full-time professional level work in the social services field is required. One (1) year of supervised Internship from an accredited college/university can be counted toward the experience requirements.
• Special Requirement: Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of this position, successful completion of an extensive background investigation is required. May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Insurability: Must possess a valid Arizona operator¡¦s license and be insurable under the tribal insurer requirements which are outlined as follows. Must be at least 18 years of age and have one (1) year of driving experience in the class of vehicle operated. Driving disqualifications will occur if during the last three (3) years, the driver has any of the following convictions: for a felony; sale, handling or use of drugs; alcohol or drug related offense that is automobile related; three (3) or more speeding violations; more than two (2) speeding tickets in excess of 15 mph; one or more other serious violations. ¡§Serious violations¡¨ are defined as: driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs; violation for alcohol offence during use of a vehicle; failure to stop/report an accident; driving while impaired; making a false accident report; homicide, manslaughter or assault arising out of the use of a vehicle; driving while license is suspended or revoked; racing; attempting to elude a police officer. Other disqualifications would include having a driver¡¦s license suspended or revoked and involvement in two (2) or more chargeable incidents.
