Jobing Description
The Tohono Oodham Language and Culture Instructor will be expected to teach Tohono Oodham language and culture courses in a tribal community college setting. A variety of delivery systems such as cooperative learning, self-paced, independent or individualized instruction, in addition to traditional classroom teaching methods may be used. Incumbents are expected to support the goals and mission of the College.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)

* Primary duties are to teach Tohono Oodham language and culture.
* Provides an effective environment for student learning through teaching assigned courses; Develops, prepares and evaluates instructional materials which promote learning.
* Evaluates student progress, provides frequent feedback to students, and refers students to appropriate college support services when needed.
* Maintains office hours in accordance with stated policy to provide assistance to students and for other related duties; Assists in the recruitment and retention of students.
* Participates in curriculum development including developing and reviewing program requirements, course teaching materials, and text selections.
* Evaluate students and place them in appropriate levels; Assess student needs and goals for each student; Provide referrals to students.
* Maintains current knowledge in the subject area and in the use of alternative teaching techniques and appropriate instructional technology; participates in faculty development activities.
* Maintains student records, attendance, goals and assessment; completes and returns required reports to the appropriate office by due date.
* Cooperates with other faculty and college staff in maintaining a positive professional and educational environment in the college.
* Attends and participates in assigned meetings, committees, training seminars/workshop, staff development and other college activities.
* Participates in commencement day exercises in academic dress, unless previously excused in accordance with stated policy/procedures; Performs related duties as required.



COMPENTENCY (To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies):

* Skilled in communications, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with college administrators, faculty, staff and students.
* Skilled in prioritizing and assigning work; preparing reports; adapting instruction to meet individual needs; speaking in public; instructing adult learners, implementing course material, and maintaining cohesive multi-level group dynamics.
* Ability to design and develop curriculum and lesson plans, provide academic advising, consult with students regarding academic success, evaluate student performance, build community relations, incorporate a variety of teaching methodologies, and serve as a member of the department and on College committees.



* Establish and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds; Ability to integrate the values of diversity and team building into educational decision-making.

Skills / Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The education and experience requirements listed below are representative of this position’s requirements.


Applicants must be able to speak, write, and understand the Tohono Oodham language.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must be certified or eligible for a Community College Teaching Certificate and have a bachelor’s degree with credit courses in Tohono Oodham language and culture or have graduate courses towards a bachelor’s degree in Tohono Oodham studies or a closely related field, to be completed within the first calendar year of employment.

The person selected will be required to successfully complete a Tohono Oodham Language and a Tohono Oodham History course within their first year of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in Tohono Oodham, education or a closely related field.

Ability to work with a multi-culturally diverse group of students and staff; One year work experience with tribal communities.

Important Notes
TOCC is a tribal college located on the Tohono Oodham Nation, 60 miles west of Tucson. The incumbent will work closely with members of the Tohono Oodham Nation within a multi-culture setting. The work place is usually quiet.
