Go to the job fair & apply online – double your chances of success!

Sometimes you go to a job fair and an employer will ask you to follow up with an online resume submission. Other times, you’ll apply online and a recruiter will ask you to meet them at their job fair. Which is it – why do you need to do both?
When an employer makes the difficult decision to invest in a new employee, many of them will really want to get to know that employee – you – as well as possible before making that final decision. So go ahead, show them you can follow up with that job fair encounter by applying online (tip - grab their business card and send them a cover letter reminding them that you met them at the job fair). If an online application leads to an invitation to meet with an employer at a job fair, do it! This is your chance at that important first interview.
Another important note about resumes and job fairs:
Sometimes employers want to get out and meet people face-to-face and also require (for applicant tracking purposes, ease of managing paperwork, etc.) an online record of your application. At job fairs, employers may decline your paper resume and ask you to submit your resume online. Don’t be discouraged. Accommodate the employer’s request by following their application guidelines. Your efforts on both fronts (attendance at the fair and applying online) are deeply appreciated by the employer.
It may seem like a lot of effort and courage to approach an employer more than once to get a job – but like any relationship, the one between you and your future employer deserves your best effort. Give it your all – and as always, let us know about your successes!

7 R’s - Tips for before, during and after a job fair

Before:
Research – know the employers attending the fair, familiarize yourself with their business, and have questions ready to ask your top three employers (questions that focus on their industry, their operations and their hiring needs).
Resume – proofread, get feedback from at least three people about your resume (pick the best editors you know).
Ready? – have everything ready to go the night before so that you are not hurried the day of the event. Make a checklist (similar to this) and review the day before:
  1. ____professional outfit pressed
  2. ____resumes reviewed and printed
  3. ____research completed
  4. ____top 3 employers identified
  5. ____map to job fair location printed
  6. ____supplies ready (pens, portfolio, etc.)
  7. ____come with a great attitude
Rest – get a good night’s sleep so you can be fresh, enthusiastic, and energetic the day of the job fair
Day of the job fair:
Relax – once you show up to the event, slow down, look over the event program and locate your most desirable employers – (make sure you get to those employers first, but still make time to talk to as many employers as possible, you never know who may have the best opportunity for you) and then go out there and be your outstanding professional self.
After the job fair:
Review – look over any notes you took at the job fair, any contact information you collected, and reflect on your performance during conversations with employers (always room for improvement) – do this as soon as you can after the event, so that your memory is fresh and you can move forward with your next steps.
Re-connect – if any employer has asked you to follow-up, or if you have any lingering curiosity about a company or a position, take advantage of your new found contact information and re-connect with them. Building a strong network is key and a quick follow-up time is a good way to start new professional relationships.

Money-Saving Job Fair Tips

You don't need to spend extra money to make a good impression on potential employers. Here are some tips to make sure your preparation doesn't break your budget.
  • Skip the fancy paper resumes or make fewer copies using high-cost paper. Also, collect as much information as you can and follow up after the event. A good practice is to collect as much information as you give out.
  • Neatness counts! You don't necessarily need a new suit to dress to impress. Just make sure that your clothes are neatly pressed and free from lint and stains. Take extra care to be neatly groomed, rested and organized - these efforts will help you give a great impression without costing you more money. Watch the video below for suggestions on finding professional clothing at a super price!
  • Take advantage of free services at the Job Fair. Get your resume reviewed. Network with employers as well as other job seekers. Attend workshops and take notes. Best of luck to you at the next job fair you attend!
  • What to Expect at the Jobing.com Job Fair

Are you prepared for the job fair? As the economy has changed, so have job fairs. Here are a few tips that can help you out before this big event.
  • Recognizing that there are fewer organizations hiring and more people looking for jobs, we have expanded our free resume review and workshops to add more value to your job fair attendance. Please take advantage of these free services.
  • With more candidates in attendance, employers may ask you to apply online as well after they speak with you. Don't be discouraged. This may help the recruiter stay organized with their application process and give you a chance to show your sincere interest. Accommodate the employer's request by following their application guidelines. Your efforts on both fronts (attendance at the fair and applying online) are deeply appreciated by the employer. Be prepared to take any materials and information from employers and to follow up with additional communication after the job fair. Have a place to keep business cards and be sure to make notes on the card so you can make sure your follow up is tailored to the conversation you have had with the employer (such as, "recruiter thought I might be a good fit for their design team").
  • Prepare for high job fair attendance. This job fair will have many attendees. This means that there will be a wait to initially enter the job fair at the beginning of the event, and that there may be a line to speak with many of the top employers. Similar to preparing for any big event, be sure to be rested, fed, relaxed and comfortably dressed so that your day is more successful.
