JOB SEEKER: Follow-up After The Expo

You are going to gather some great employment leads and established valuable contacts at the Jobing.com Career Expo. After you have connected face-to-face with local employers, it is important to have a good follow-up strategy.

Post Event "Quick Tips"

Upload Revised Resume - If you took advantage of the free resume review, now is the time to upload your newly revised resume to Jobing.com. Remember, posting your resume makes you visible to companies searching our resume database.

Review - Look over any notes you took at the job fair and review information you collected. Pay special attention to preferred methods of follow-up. We recommend doing this as soon as you can after the event so you can move forward with your next steps.

Organize - Organize the companies you met with by level of interest and compatibility. Do your skills and experience match the positions available? If so, consider these companies top prospects in your job search. Keep the contact information of the employers you will not be applying to. This is a great way to expand your professional network for opportunities that may present themselves later.

Contact - If interested in applying to an employer, or if you have any additional questions about a company or a position, now is the time to contact them. Be sure to reintroduce yourself, referencing your conversation, and thank the hiring professional for their time at the event. This can be done through a cover letter, email or phone call.

Personalized Thank You - Send every employer you spoke with a thank you note after the event. A hand written thank you card is the most personal and could set you apart from the other Job Seekers. Thank the recruiter for taking the time to speak with you. Let them know that you are eager to speak with them further about an opportunity to work together. When appropriate, follow-up through email or a phone call.

Why did employers ask me to apply for their positions online?

If you attended our most recent job fair an employer may have asked you to apply online rather than give them a copy of your paper resume. You may be wondering: "Why do I need to apply online when I'm at a job fair?"

With thousands of Job Seekers at the last event, it is important for employers to manage resumes effectively. Don't be discouraged, submitting your resume online eliminates any chance of a misplaced resume, and increases your opportunity to make a final connection with the employer. Submitting your resume after you have met with the recruiter also allows you to include valuable information you gathered about the company in your cover letter.

Finding a job in today's economy takes time and effort. Taking the time to meet with propective enmployers at the event is the first step. With many job seekers competing for fewer opportunites, the follow up process is critically important. Be sure to follow the recruiter's instructions, and act quickly for those positions of interest.
