Some interesting opportunities can present themselves if you are unemployed in today’s economy. For instance, you have the ability to switch over to a brand new industry without anyone so much as batting an eye. Think back to a few years ago. It would have been difficult for someone to simply change professional courses without prior experience or a really, really, really, good connection. Today, the world has taken an unexpected turn and there are many highly qualified candidates who are not able to find work as quickly as they expected. It’s not uncommon for some of these fine job seekers to venture out and try something completely different; or do I dare say, something they have always wanted to do. If you find yourself in this position and are ready to dive head first into a new field, I have a few words of advice. First, be sure you are highlighting your transferable skills on your resume (these are the skills that you have learned from previous positions that are not industry specific, (think conflict resolution, relationship building, etc). Second, use your time to gain whatever experience you can. Here are a few ways you can go about doing so:

November 11th ... a Day to Celebrate, Commemorate... a Day to Remember!
posted Thursday, November 5, 2009
Wednesday, November 11, 2009... it's a holiday. It may be a day that you'll go to class or work; it may be a day you'll do some shopping or go to the gym or play some golf...or you may catch up on some yard work.
But more importantly, it's a day that I hope you will take time out to commemorate Veterans Day 2009 ... by going to a local community parade; or by flying the American flag proudly; or by attending a commemorative service...or simply saying "Thank You for Your Service" to each veteran that you may know or meet. Joanna Fuchs wrote a poem that is on point: Take A Moment To Thank A Veteran When you see someone in a uniform Someone who serves us all, Doing Military duty, Answering their country's call, Take a moment to thank them For protecting what you hold dear; Tell them you are proud of them; Make it very clear. Just tap them on the shoulder, Give them a smile, and say, "Thanks for what you're doing; To keep us safe in the USA!" Jobing.com is proud to be partners with / supporters of various Veteran organizations. Over the past year I have had the privilege of meeting and working with so many active, retired, reservist and national guard members throughout the state. I would like to invite you to take a few minutes to view three of the videos that we have done over the past year that capture 2 eras of conflict as well as a new program established in 2009 by a U.S. Army veteran to connect veterans and the business community. I feel the videos will reinforce why November 11, 2009 is so very important to us this year. Salute A Soldier (Supporting Veterans with Injuries as They Transition Back into the Arizona Workforce) - an emotional story as told through the eyes of a mother, Kathy Pearce from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense - an Advocate for severely injured soldiers - who is an East Valley resident and who is also the mother of a soldier, Staff Sergeant Brent Bretz, who was severely injured in Iraq. The link to this powerful video is:
Vietnam Veterans of America - Chapter 1011 - This video was shot at the beautiful Vietnam Memorial at Wesley Bolin Plaza in Phoenix a few months ago. The national VVA has over 50,000 individual members - there are several Chapters in Arizona - the video highlights Chapter 1011 based in Mesa. I encourage all Vietnam era veterans to consider joining the VVA...they are truly making a difference in every community in Arizona that they have a presence. The link to the video is:
Honor Our Troops (H.O.T.) USA - Honor Our Troops USA was formed in 2009 as an initiative to connect businesses that want to honor veterans for their service. Since its inception, H.O.T. has received much interest from other states as well...and it is hoped to be a national program eventually. If you are business...get involved! If you are a veteran...contact H.O.T. for more info! The link to the video is:
(All three videos can also be viewed on the Jobing.com website - just click on Videos and type in the key words in the Search block.) Please enjoy this very special Wednesday - November 11th ... and be sure and thank each and every veteran for their service and sacrifice for this great country.

Should you attend the Jobing.com Healthcare Job Fair on WED
posted Monday, November 2, 2009 9:56 AM
If you are planning on attending the upcoming Healthcare Job Fair, coming prepared with realistic expectations of the event and a well thought out strategy will be your key to success.
Start by doing research on the companies you are interested in. This is a healthcare specific event and these companies are primarily hiring for nurses and technicians, so it’s important to take into consideration the types of jobs that will be represented at the event. Several companies are hiring for non-healthcare jobs at this event, see the list below. If you are looking for something outside of the healthcare industry, such as an IT position, understand that the recruiter who handles that position may not be at the event. In doing your research, note any additional questions you have for the recruiters that couldn’t be answered by websites or job postings and use that information in your conversations at the job fair.
Here is a current list of positions that will be at the event: Alarys Home Health - Home Health Nursing, Home Health Therapists, Home Health Aides

What does it mean to “sell yourself”? It’s ensuring that your resume makes it to the top of the stack, or that your name is on the short list of preferred candidates. Sure it starts with a good cover letter. But does it really start there? It’s having confidence in yourself and your abilities in order to convince others that you are the perfect person for that incredible job that you really want.
In order to be the best, you have to know that you’re the best, and that means you have to do your homework. That’s right, education. There are many jobs out there but you may not have the right background. Well get it. You may be busy with a job that you don’t really want, but it pays the bills. Or you may be collecting unemployment for the time being, but that won’t last forever. Take a big tug on those bootstraps and earn the education that you need to better position yourself, professionally. Going back to school… the idea is quite inspiring, really. But where will you find the time? You have it… you just need to carve it out of your schedule. The good news is that you live in the day-in-age of the Internet and what an awesome tool that is. Because of its widespread access, there are some really great online education options out there that offer you the opportunity to study wherever and whenever you want. The fact of the matter is, online education is booming right now and because of the competition, you have some excellent options. So here’s the drill: finish your bachelors, get your masters, differentiate yourself with a specialized certificate in an up-and-coming field like Sustainability Leadership, Software Engineering and Networking, or go global with an international business doctorate. Do your homework. Research your options. You may be surprised at the educational opportunities that exist today within our pivotal global economy. Tags

There was much to celebrate last week at the Diversity Leadership Alliance Conference, including the winners and finalists recognized by the State Council for the Arizona State Society of Human Resources Management Association. AZSHRM is proud to once again honor companies, organizations and individuals for their 2009 diversity and inclusion efforts in the workplace and beyond. This was the award’s eighth year and many of the past winners were in attendance at the conference to recognize this year's winners as well.
AZSHRM partnered again this year with the Diversity Leadership Alliance and Jobing.com. There were many wonderful nominations this year who should all be proud of the great work that is being done. Congratulations to the Spirit of Enterprise Award Winners & Finalists

13th Annual Even the worst recession since the Great Depression couldn’t stop many businesses in Arizona from boosting our economy and giving back to our community over the past year. On September 24, ten of the best companies in the state were honored, with five of those being named winners of Spirit of Enterprise Awards for their contributions. The Spirit of Enterprise Center of the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University is proud to present these awards to recognize firms that demonstrate ethics, energy and excellence in entrepreneurship. This year’s finalists were distinctly divided into two groups. One group had survived the last major economic downturn by learning to reinvent themselves and thrive, and the other had emerged since the beginning of this decade by carving out new businesses and seizing new opportunities. Over 800 Valley business and community leaders were on hand on Sept. 24 for the awards luncheon at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix when the winners were first announced.
Caliente Construction, Inc. – Overcoming Adversity Award sponsored by the Arizona Lottery. When the company’s founder became terminally ill, rather than selling off the business, his wife chose to support their employees and prove that a woman-owned construction company could succeed in a male-dominated industry. The firm now has a repeat-client/client-referral rate above 85 percent. This year, it has actually added employees and expects to see a 20-percent increase in revenue, despite the recession. D. P. Electric, Inc., - Gary L. Trujillo Minority Enterprise Award, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. This fast-growing electrical contractor has a safety incentive program and an employee profit-sharing program. It also features an in-house mentoring program designed to help other minority businesses. Express Digital Solutions – Special Achievement in Entrepreneurship Award. This authorized Xerox Corp. Agency also specializes in electronic document management and paper document scanning. The company partners with Gompers Habilitation center to employ more than 30 adults with disabilities. Terralever, - Emerging Entrepreneur Award sponsored by U.S. Bank. This award-winning interactive marketing and technology services firm is an interactive partner with big names, including Facebook and Microsoft. However, it also has a goal of helping small local companies with world-class online marketing strategies. Visit www.spiritofenterprise.org for more information about the awards.
Attending the Healthcare Job Fair - How are you getting there?
posted Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Attending a job fair can be one of the most powerful tools available in your job search today - with a little preplanning. One thing to consider is the costs associated with attending the event. If you are planning on attending the Healthcare Job Fair on Wednesday, November 4th, at the Phoenix Convention Center - parking in the downtown garages cost $12 and up. To help you save money on parking, here are some tips.
You may want to consider carpooling with a friend and share the parking fee. There is a limited number of meter parking available, so come prepared with plenty of change just in case you luck out. Another option is to take the light rail. The fare is $3.50 for an all day pass, and the walk is not that far. You'll want to exit at the Washington/3rd stop. Here is a link to the light rail map: http://www.valleymetro.org/images/uploads/lightrail_publications/METRO-light-rail-line.pdf
