Blog Post: Write cover letters that matter

What’s up Tucson job seekers!  Do you remember the Wendy’s hamburger commercials where the lady looks at the pitiful little burger and yells “where’s the beef”?  I used to love those spots, and they taught us a simple, yet powerful lesson.  Are y’all ready for the wisdom?  Life is about substance, not fluff.  A hamburger with no beef isn’t a hamburger at all. 

The same thing applies to our job search.  Just like we can’t get full on lettuce and tomato alone, we can’t give our employers fluffy, wimpy little cover letters either.  Simply put, a cover letter is an opportunity to do two things… 

1)       Introduce yourself to an employer.  Why do you love your work?  What are you passionate about doing?  What is your strongest skill that sets you apart from the others?  Use the cover letter to highlight what makes you extraordinary.  BUT, you must be specific.  Nobody wants to hear vague rhetoric and spin.  Speak from heart about what makes you get up in the morning.

2)       Give me the facts.  Pick out and highlight a key accomplishment from your resume.  Maybe you set a sales record, or maybe you won an award from your company because you broke your neck to help a customer.  Give me a specific example of a time when you rocked it out as an employee!  I want to know what you did, not what you thought about doing.  Can you see the difference?  Go get 'em.--Doug
