As a job seeker in today’s economy you should be looking for every opportunity to stand out among the competition. Job fairs are a great way to meet face-to-face with hiring managers and get an edge over candidates who only apply online. With the recent spike in unemployment the dynamics of attending job fairs has dramatically changed, so how do you ensure you are using your time a job fair most efficiently? Your success at these events depends on creating a structured job fair strategy.
Job fairs offer the unique opportunity to ask valuable questions to someone who works for the company you are interested in. Start with a 30 second commercial of yourself as an introduction. Let the recruiter know who you are, what skills you possess and what type of position you are interested in. Then ask one or two questions of the recruiter that cannot be answered with the information on their website. Be sure to taking advantage of that opportunity.
Take notes regarding your conversations and reference that information in your cover letter when you apply or in your thank you note.
