What is your favorite part of your current job?
The amazing challenges I face. As an events manager, I must be very organized and a master at time management. I currently work for two very large colleges at Arizona State University. The demands of working between the colleges are intense and very rewarding. I really enjoy it when I see people having a great time at an event I’ve managed.
What career path did you follow from your ASU degree to your present job? Immediately after graduating I worked in Southern California managing the Sports and Aquatics Division for the city of Manhattan Beach. I coordinated the Manhattan Beach Open (known as the Wimbledon of beach volleyball) for two years. I then moved up the coast to Ventura County, California, where I managed events and facilities for the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District.
I came back to Arizona in the spring of 1998 and worked for the town of Gilbert, which at the time was the fastest growing community in the United States. I spent nine years building and managing the town’s recreation centers, the came to ASU to do event-planning work, in part as a result of my membership and activity in the ASU Alumni Association.
Describe skills learned at ASU that you use daily in your job.
Time management and organizational skill.
Were any ASU-affiliated persons helpful to you in advancing your career?
I had numerous ASU professors assist me in advancing my career. I maintained excellent communication with them well after I had graduated. They have always provided excellent guidance. In addition staff at the ASU Alumni Association have been extremely supportive and an amazing resource for career advancement!
What advice would you give to current students or job-seekers about finding work in your field?
I know it’s been said a lot, but networking is essential! Students and job seekers MUST get their names out there in a positive way. Their name needs to be synonymous with integrity, enthusiasm and an excellent work ethic.
Volunteering for professional organizations is an excellent way to meet influential people and build a network. Always follow up and remain in contact with those you meet. When volunteering, you never know who you’ll meet in the elevator, on a shuttle or just walking down a hallway. Get out there with energy and enthusiasm!
Envision that dream career and make it happen. I’m living my dream every day I come to work here at Arizona State University.
