Blog Post: Professional Development for Unemployed/Furloughed Technicians

posted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 8:49 AM

In these tough economic times, it is increasingly important for technicians to keep current with advances in their field and expand their areas of expertise. Additional training and experience could prove to be a crucial advantage in this highly competitive job market. The Maricopa Community Colleges recognize this importance and, through funding from the National Science Foundation, are offering a Maricopa Professional Development Initiative for unemployed or furloughed technicians to participate in professional development opportunities at the High Impact Technology Exchange Conference (HI-TEC).

HI-TEC offers a wealth of practical information to help technicians further develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities, while providing valuable networking opportunities. Preconference workshops allow participants to gain hands-on experience with current and emerging technologies, while conference sessions and keynotes provide an up-close look at the ever-advancing tools, training demands, and recent developments in emerging and converging technology fields.

HI-TEC uniquely explores emerging and converging technology areas such as:
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Agricultural, Environmental, & Energy
  • Biotechnology & Chemical
  • Engineering
  • Information & Security
  • Learning & Evaluation
  • Micro- & Nanotechnologies

The Maricopa Professional Development Initiative for Technicians is offering 25 awards for unemployed or furloughed technicians to attend.  To be eligible applicants must show proof that they are currently either unemployed or furloughed as a technician in an advanced technology area related to the HI-TEC featured technology areas. Award recipients must attend one & a half days of preconference workshops and/or tours July 19-20 in addition to the main conference sessions July 21-22.

Maricopa Professional Development Initiative applications are available at www.matecnetworks.org/technician. The application deadline is June 18, 2009. Only the first 100 applications will be accepted, 25 of which will receive the professional development award.
