Blog Post: Life Lessons and Leadership

posted Thursday, May 21, 2009 9:50 AM

Give yourself permission to love your work – and demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring and coaching others.  In doing so, you provide opportunities for personal and psychological growth.  As a leader, align your more experienced employees with others who are newer to the company – resulting in a three-part benefit:
  • More experienced employee feels more valued
  • Newer employee provides renewed outlook and questions ideas
  • Discover what inspires these employees

This process ensures that you are positioning these employees for success, and more importantly, you are finding out what they are passionate about.

Recently, I spoke with a business associate about ways to implement a plan for a new project I am passionate about.  We brainstormed ideas and action items I can take.  This made me wonder:  “How often do we set goals, create a plan, but forget to write down the action items necessary to achieve the goals?”  According to my associate, Beth Terry, when we have a passion for what we are doing, we need to give ourselves permission to achieve our goals and “have happen whatever we want to happen”.  This is an intriguing thought, because of the passion for what we are doing, we charge ahead and forget the intermediate steps necessary to achieve success.  Writing down your goals, discussing them and taking action are all steps necessary for success.  In Beth’s book, “101 Ways to Make Your Life Easier”, you will find wonderful, witty ideas to help you succeed.  Her advice and laughs are interesting observations for life.  I recommend this book as it would be a terrific gift for the graduate, or a new employee that you have.  (Go to www.BethTerry.com/Beths-Store)
