Blog Post: Take your personal game up during your next interview

posted Thursday, April 23, 2009 2:05 PM

It’s amazing to see how many people go unprepared for what could be the most important meeting of their lives--an interview. I’m going to share 2 points with you in this blog, and I have started writing an article which I will post in my newsletter later this month. My first point is that you should dress up. What I mean is no matter what job you are going for, dress like you are ready to go to work that day. My second point is to be prepared to tell your prospective employer 3 things you can do to help their business. It could be your how your contacts can help bring in new business. It could be in the area of cutting costs, or it could be how you believe you can raise the performance of your prospective peers. If you want to win at the Job Game today, you must be ready to play it with something meaningful for an organization.

I have to say I am a pretty damn good recruiter, however, I can't interview to save my life or anyone elses! I get tongue tied or ramble and its a fiasco!

And the big questions like the one you mentioned and the famous "tell me about a difficult situation" question... DOOM!

What can I do?

Hi Joshua. I have the same issue. No matter how well I know my topic, I stammer through professional conversations...especially in front of groups. One solution is to video tape your resume then show it on television. Check out a company called "Time For Me TV' for television placement.

And I am an exceptional interview, flying through every screening exam known to human kind. Yet I only GET the 1st interview. Never invited back (at least not in Phoenix.) I think hiring managers are simply overwhelmed with exceptional candidates, and the best PR person gets the offer.
