Blog Post: Individualizing your cover letter and resume- is it worth it?
posted Thursday, March 26, 2009 6:26 PM
At a job fair recently I had the opportunity to talk with employers about what makes candidates stand out from other applicants. Their response was an individualized resume and cover letter. How many people have sent out the same resume and cover letter to employers, changing only the pertinent information, and hope to get a call for an interview? There are probably many out there that can relate as we often think the more jobs we apply for the better our chances are of getting a call. However, employers want to see that you are truly interested in their company alone. If they look at the job description and then read your resume, they want to see the skills they are seeking reflected. Though we might like to think they don't know the same resume was sent to dozens of employers, they really are able to tell and this doesn't make you stand out as a candidate. Find a job you are excited about, take the time to really understand what the employer is looking for, and make sure you convey that in your resume and cover letter. When you find that perfect job, you only have one shot at impressing the employer, so give it your all! Remember, it's quality not quantity that is going to impress employers and land you the job.
