Blog Post: Fighting for Air

The American Lung Association will host its 7th Annual Blow the Whistle on Asthma Walk on Saturday, April 4th at Scottsdale Civic Center. Companies, families, and schools work to build strong teams of those who are willing to help those who struggle to breathe. Teams are a great way to:

• Boost morale within a company/organization
• Increase awareness about lung disease in Arizona
• Increase your network by building a team from multiple areas of your life and inviting your team members to bring their friends and contacts on board
• Honor someone in your life affected by lung disease

Registration is free and there are all kinds of activities at the Walk for kids and adults of all ages. Participants are asked to fundraise on behalf of those with lung disease by asking friends, family, neighbors etc... to make a pledge - large or small - to the American Lung Association and its mission to improve lung health and prevent lung disease.  A leisurely 5k walk is followed by live music, a free pancake breakfast, a kids' activity corner and more.

It is critical to address lung health in Arizona because:

• More than 800,000 people in Arizona are affected by lung disease
• Arizona has the 2nd highest asthma rate in the country 
• The American Lung Association's annual State of the Air report shows that Maricopa County ranks #19 among the top 25 most polluted counties in the country.
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the 3rd leading cause of death in Arizona
