Blog Post: PlAyInG a NeW TuNe - When You've Lost Something Give Something!
posted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 3:45 PM
The 1960's were tough times for many. The paradigms of the culture were in flux and a seemingly unending war was on. Sound familiar? Out of the turmoil a songwriter by the name of James Taylor wrote You've Got a Friend in 1968. It was later recorded by many others and most recently in 2007 by Billy Ray Cyrus. It was a message about caring in tough times. Go to www.rhapsody.com and check out the lyrics to discover inspiration for 2008 - 2009.
Caring in tough times is about giving something when you've lost something. William Colgate was the child of an immigrant family who had given up everything to come to America. In the economy of the time they discovered that they were worse off for coming. As a teenager, William's family could not afford to keep him at home and he left home to fend for himself making candles and selling them on the street. He pledged to give 10 cents of every dollar he made to care for someone else in need and eventually as he prospered gave 50% of his income to help others. By the end of his life he gave 100% up as his act of caring. His legacy is known today as the Colgate-Palmolive Company one of the oldest corporations in America. Here are 2 ways to give something back even if you've lost your job recently. Be employed in weeks through the Caregiver training opportunities at Gateway Community College in 2009: 1. Take a Caregivers class and start caring for others as a professional caregiver. (Jan. 7) 2. Attend Together We Care Day and network with employers and caregivers. (Jan. 15) For more information contact Gateway Community College's Center for Workforce Transition at 602-286-8158 or www.compassionatecareers.org We specialize in helping you care for your future and the future of others!
