Blog Post: Where Do We Go From Here?
posted Thursday, December 18, 2008 6:15 PM
The past few months have been difficult for all of us. Whether you are an HR professional, employee, business owner, career services professional, job seeker, Arizona resident or global citizen, we have all faced significant challenges during the past year. Media sources, general conversations and even urban legends profess the ills of our economy and job market. However, how we each deal with the situation is crucial. As the end of 2008 draws nearer, we all need to take time to reflect, refuel and re-ignite our lives and career passion.
Job Seekers – Take time to review the videos and blogs on Jobing.com. Valuable information exists in this information! Additionally, Heed the advice of by my colleagues at ASU in an earlier post regarding year end follow up, as well as seek out assistance from others. It is easy to get frustrated, angry or even apathetic about your quest for a new position. However, find comfort that opportunities do exist, it just is taking longer than in the past. Seek out support and advice from One-Stop Centers (http://www.arizonaworkforceconnection.com), community college career centers, community organizations, such as Goodwill, Friendly House, AWEE, Rehabilitation Services Administration, etc. There are people who have dedicated their lives to helping you! If you are facing financial and personal issues (such as depression/anxiety/substance abuse/family issues), check out Community Information & Referral Services. They have a plethora of resources that can help with your situation. http://www.cirs.org Fact of the matter (in my humble opinion) - We are all in this together and together we will move into better times. Take time to be kind to each other, “pay it forward” and ask for assistance from your fellow human beings. In the words of Jerry Springer (can you believe I am quoting Jerry Springer!), “Take care of yourself, and each other.” Best wishes in 2009. It will be a good year!

Thank you!
I was given the opportunity to have my resume evaluated by Right Management. They also provided resource materials and great advice to assist with my job search. As I was told; “give your resume the WOW effect!” An awesome cover letter is also a huge factor; customize each cover letter to the job posting requirements. The cover letter should confirm that you have the skills and experience to fulfill their open position. Follow up after the interview; yes send a thank you card, email etc. The next day after a great interview with four wonderful ladies; I delivered my thank you card in person along with Cookies from Home. Yes, this is over the line and not expected; but the interview with these ladies was a great experience.
I applied to hundreds of jobs online but I wasn’t getting interview calls. Determined to get noticed; I invested in some special resume paper, large catalog mailing envelopes, and labels. In addition to applying online I also started mailing my resume & cover letters. I also purchased a box of report covers; which made my resume look more professional. They do say, it takes money to make money. A little investment can make a difference.
Networking is a must. Search for old friends, co-workers, etc. Tell everyone, even the clerk at your local convenience store that you are unemployed. Keep several copies of your resume with you at all times. Create business cards with highlights of your qualifications and contact information. I even networked at a funeral for a former co-worker; yes that sounds bad; but I needed a job and I had to do whatever it took to find employment.
Most importantly, don’t lose hope. Yes, I did land a great job that was posted on Jobing.com. I tell my new manager & co-workers everyday that I feel like I won the lottery and if I am dreaming please don’t wake me up.
Best of luck,
Sherry
