Blog Post: How To Prepare For Your Job Search

posted Monday, November 17, 2008 7:52 AM

One of the most widely offered pieces of job hunting advice is, “be prepared”. But, what exactly does that mean? Here are a few ways you can prepare yourself to land that next great job.

Begin with research - Before you apply for any position make sure you have thoroughly read through the company job posting as well as the company’s own website. Use this information to decide exactly why you are interested in this company and position. This will be very useful in your job interview as that question that is often asked.

Google the company and CEO/President
– This is a great way to learn about the company’s community involvement. You will be able to see if your own values match those of this potential employer. It also a great way to see if the company has been involved with any current events. You may consider including some of this information in your cover letter. Possibly mentioning how you feel you would be a great fit for the organization based on the common values you share.

Take the guesswork out of why you should be hired
– Based on what you have learned about the organization and position from the research you have done, decide how your past experience has prepared you for this position. Even if you are career changing into a brand new industry, you can translate past experience into relevant skills. Decide what skills you currently have that can transfer over to the new role and include that in your resume. Also, be prepared to share a story of work you have done previously and how you think what you learned from that experience will be helpful in the new role.

Know your weaknesses – This is important especially if you are changing careers. You may not have the industry experience that other candidates have. Address that in the interview and discuss how you are working to improve and learn, and the recruiter will see that you have really thought about this position. This is another great time to discuss how your past experience has prepared you for this new position.

Regardless of the industry or position you are interested in, it is incredibly important that you prepare yourself for your job search. Employers are looking for candidates who are serious about their open positions and this is a great way to send that message.

Thnk you for your helpful hints and reminders. It made me think about my weaknesses in a realistic way. I usually relay my weakness as something within my personal life, staiying away from admitting any wthin the work place. After reading your suggestions, I'm of the opinion that it's perfefectly human to have "had" weaknesses that have been "overcame" and that it's ok to mention your strides toward perfection as we all have them and will always have them.
