Blog Post: The Ultimate Sales Call - Your next interview!
posted Thursday, May 1, 2008 2:22 PM
The interview process can be fun and very inspiring! WHAT are you talking about you say? The interviewing process is the ultimate sales call, you are selling YOU! Since I love selling and teaching people how to do it better, let me provide some tips how you can be more effective in your next interview. Here are a few golden nuggets to help you get started. First, don't show up and throw up! I mean, when you go to an interview and the employer asks you to talk about your background, do NOT start describing every grueling detail of every job you have held since you were 18. Instead, ask the person interviewing you if they would be so kind to tell you a bit more about the position and what top 3 to 5 attributes they are seeking in an ideal candidate. This way you can obtain the critical information about what they specifically are looking for AND then you can respond by articulating how your experience and background relates to those attributes. The key here, just like during a sales call, you want to focus on the relevant benefits you bring that match their needs. Second, make sure you do your research about the company and position and are prepared for the meeting. As an employer, I always get frustrated when a candidate comes to an interview and I ask what they know about my company and they respond by saying not much. Again, successful sales professionals spend a good amount of time preparing for their sales call. Go to their website and review it. Search on the web for other recent news stories or initiatives. If it is a public company, review their financial information and their organizational structure. Figure out ideas about how YOU can help them. This research will allow you to form intelligent questions so you can understand more about the company and the work environment and why you want to work there! And third, come prepared with relevant and powerful questions. Again, this is a two way process where you are trying to discover as much about the company and the position as the employer is during the interview. So a great questions near the end of the meeting, how do I compare to the other candidates you are interviewing. This will help you gauge if you can close the deal! If you come better prepared and ask better questions regarding the opportunity, you will stand out. Take these simple golden nuggets and apply them to your next interview. We am confident if you use these powerful sales strategies, you will close the next deal with the company and position that you have been wanting! Have fun and be inspired!
