Blog Post: Overcoming Job Barriers
posted Wednesday, April 23, 2008 3:01 PM
For those able to work, gaining employment is often one of the first steps to ending homelessness. CASS’ Employment Services works with clients who are job-ready and easily employable. Employment Services also works with clients who are harder to place due to challenges such as a lack of work history or job skills, a limited education and physical disabilities.
Hector, a former CASS client, worked with Employment Services to overcome challenges including a learning disability, speech impediment and physical disabilities. Combined, these challenges made placing Hector in appropriate employment very difficult. Hector continued to work with an Employment Services Job Developer who tried everything and never gave up. Finally, Hector was placed at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Phoenix working within the kitchen! The Sheraton is quite pleased with Hector’s job performance and Hector has already saved enough money to move to his own apartment at Steele Commons, a permanent supportive housing project developed by CASS affiliate, Arizona Housing Inc.
