Blog: Gayla DoucetClimb Steps 3 and 4 on the Change Ladder
posted Monday, November 2, 2009 1:51 PM
Welcome back! As my previous blog entry stated, coaching is all about helping people successfully move upwards through change in order to reach their goals. We’re never going to escape “change” in our lives, so figuring out how to use it to your advantage is extremely valuable.
All of us have tried self-change at some point, and probably most of us have failed once or twice. Remember those New Year’s resolutions? Remember your last infamous attempt to lose weight? Well, you know already that lasting change is rarely accomplished through your first attempt. People need to persevere over time with deliberate intent - ideally with the support of a professional coach. The six-stage program for “…overcoming bad habits and moving your life positively forward,” developed through extensive research by James O. Prochaska, et al, is a model of intentional change. It can be applied toward pinpointing and working to achieve a variety of positive behavioral changes in areas such as: procrastination, poor interpersonal communication, projected negativity, lack of personal accountability, and other behavioral blocks preventing people from achieving more success and satisfaction in their lives. My previous blog post covered the first two "Stages of Change" identified by Prochaska in his book “Changing for Good:” Pre-contemplation, where you may not even be thinking about climbing the first rung of the change ladder at all, perhaps resisting and/or opting not to change; Contemplation, where you are facing the idea of a desirable change in your life, and seriously considering how to tackle it. Now, Stages 3 and 4 are where YOU REALLY GET TO WORK at making your desired changes happen: TTM Stage 3: PREPARATION – Putting your ducks in order, so to speak. Depending on your style, you may go about this quickly, without much thought (risking a premature end to your change process), or you may gather tons of information and research to bolster your efforts (risking becoming stuck in “getting ready to get ready”). Either extreme poses dangers of falling off the change ladder. Here are some tactics that will help you prepare for the challenges ahead:
TTM Stage 4: ACTION – As you well know, change doesn’t happen unless ACTION precedes it. However, in Prochaska’s research we find a major key to the success of YOU taking action for change: you must value the PROS of change over the CONS before the action you take will be worth it. In other words, you have to see what’s in it for YOU, and that has to count for MUCH more than what you’re leaving behind. This may be exactly where the open manhole unexpectedly appears, and many would-be self-changers, rushing forward, fall into it. Make a list of what your BENEFITS will be in making a change, and what a separate list of what you’re going to LOSE. Which list outweighs the other? Evaluate whether you’re ready to take action now, and if you’re not, just take one step back. If the BENEFITS win, proceed with ACTION and use these tips for support:
Successful change takes continual focus and practice, but habits can be replaced with other habits – the ones you WANT to own. Please look for my next post which will explore the two last components of Prochaska’s change process, namely Stages 5 and 6: Maintenance and Recycling. Until then, focus on the above stages in earnest to make progress in your desired life changes. _________________________________________________________________________

Use the Change Ladder to Reach Your Goals
posted Monday, October 12, 2009 1:37 PM
Coaching is all about helping people successfully move upwards through change in order to reach their goals. Change is one of the only sure bets in your life (you know the others). It stands to reason that knowing how to climb the “change ladder” to reach the heights to which you aspire will be extremely valuable throughout your life.
How fast can you change? Behavioral change is rarely accomplished through just one event, but most often over time with deliberate intent - ideally with the support of a certified professional coach. It’s helpful to take steps toward change that are well defined, solid and supportive in moving you up the ladder to your goal. James O. Prochaska, co-author with Norcross and DiClemente of "Changing for Good: A Revolutionary Six-Stage Program for Overcoming Bad Habits and Moving Your Life Positively Forward" (Collins 1994), is well known for introducing a simple and effective "stage-based" approach with widespread utility. His Transtheoretical Model (TTM) has been in wide use by health professionals and coaches worldwide since it was introduced in the 1980’s. TTM is a model of intentional change. It focuses on the decision making of the individual to take steps toward achieving desired and lasting change. The model was originally applied within a clinical setting to help patients stop smoking. Over the years it has been widely accepted as a useful change model within the professional coaching community and can be applied toward pinpointing and working to achieve a variety of positive behavioral changes in areas such as: procrastination, , poor interpersonal communication, projected negativity, lack of personal accountability, and other behavioral blocks preventing people from achieving more success and satisfaction in their lives. The "Stages of Change" identified by Prochaska in his book contain: 1. Pre-contemplation 2. Contemplation 3. Preparation 4. Action 5. Maintenance 6. Recycling In the spirit of “climbing a ladder,” I will cover two TTM stages in this post and two each in the next two posts. As you read along, ask yourself where YOU are in relation to making positive changes in your life. Keep in mind – IF you are in the “Pre-contemplation” stage, you may not be able to answer this question! (So, if you are open, think about the possibilities in asking someone you trust and who knows you: “If I were to increase my personal success and satisfaction, where do you believe I could focus for the most benefit?” Just a thought…). If you are already in the “Contemplation” stage, however, you will be able to visualize and relate to the basic rungs of the ladder above you! TTM Stage 1: PRE-CONTEMPLATION – No ladder in sight! If you are repeatedly practicing an unsuccessful behavior that is blocking your success, you are clueless about it at this stage. Maybe someone is trying to tell you, for example, that your habit of ignoring the contributions of others is blocking your next promotion. If so, you may be in denial about what they say, or have ready-made excuses why their observations are off-base. You may be blaming others for your lack of success, or just not able to see it. You may not see a reason to climb that first rung of the ladder (until you are fired). Here are some tactics you can take, if you want – and they begin with an open mind:
TTM Stage 2: CONTEMPLATION – You see the ladder off in the distance. It might be useful, but maybe you’ve tried to change before and it didn’t work. Maybe you believe the timing isn’t right. Maybe you think it’s not worth the effort of climbing all those rungs on the ladder. But – the good thing is you’re thinking seriously about how something in your life might be changed for the better. So you could decide to:
To summarize this post, getting started with the change process is a matter of seriously focusing on what you want to change. You need to see it clearly and want it before proceeding with Stages 3 and 4, “Preparation and Action,” which are the topics in my next post. Are you in the “Contemplation” stage? Then it is an ideal time to have a conversation with a professionally certified coach to help you clarify your focus on the change you want to make. What's YOUR 20% Performance Edge?
posted Friday, August 14, 2009 2:10 PM
Perhaps better recognized as the 80/20 Rule, The Pareto Principle is essentially this: only a few key things contribute to the majority of results. This principle applies to nearly everything you can imagine, and here’s how it might also apply to you in the workplace:
It's deceptively simple, but an incredibly powerful insight – especially for job seekers today. Maintaining a focus on how The Pareto Principle is operating in your own career can help clarify your next step, boost your performance edge, help you earn more recognition and money, plus expand your job opportunities into areas that truly FIT your performance profile. Think about it. What are your top ten talents? According to The Pareto Principle, even when you are using all ten of those top talents, they will not all be equally effective. In fact, the 80-20 rule states that only 2 of your talents will account for 80% of your success. The other 8 will be much less effective. Identifying those top two talents – which are your 20% performance edge - takes you a long way in achieving greater career success and personal satisfaction. Let’s look at some samples to help you identify what constitutes your performance edge and 80 percent of your success. Which of these talents are yours?
This list is only provided as a sample so you can create your own. After thinking about your talents and uncovering the pattern of your biggest career successes, you will likely be able to identify your own performance edge – the 20% of your talents that led to 80% of your success. The result is incredibly valuable: you will be able to FOCUS on the job opportunities ahead that leverage your performance edge for further success! Sometimes people have problems seeing and valuing their own talents. It is especially true when they are feeling disappointed, deflated and/or unsuccessful after a recent job loss. If you are in this situation now, you may need an objective viewpoint to support you in defining your unique talents. A certified Career Coach is ready to work with you to uncover your performance edge, and make effective plans to use it to do MORE of what makes you most successful and happy in your career! Aim Ahead - Match Work with Your Values
posted Friday, July 31, 2009 1:39 PM
Today is July 31, 2009. We are all doing our best to hang on until the end of an economic recession that has leveled thousands of businesses, careers, and households throughout the world. There is virtually no one who doesn't feel the damaging effects of this downturn in one way or another.
I know many people who are looking for a job - ANY job to pay the rent. That's the way it is today, and that is our immediate challenge. But that's not the way it will be down the road, once we're in a fast growing NEW economy. There will be opportunities that we cannot fully anticipate right now when businesses and organizations rethink and reorganize to meet challenges we have never faced before: new legislation, new environmental priorities, shrunken budgets, population growth demands, increased diversity, new products, new technology services, etc. All this will drive an accelerated need for new thinking, new solutions – and NEW work for us! When the new economy emerges, as you know it must, YOU can emerge even better prepared to participate in it. We can all use some of our "downtime" positively to take better aim at what kind of work will be most valuable and satisfying to us moving forward, and how we can leverage our personal values to fully contribute our talents in reshaping the world. Here’s a way to begin taking aim at work that matches your values. Begin to contemplate what really drives you as an individual. Understand that behind what drives you is a firmly held “value.” Each of the following paragraphs describes a different personal value. Which of the following 5 paragraphs appeals to you most?
Now, which of the above 5 values are most important to you? Whatever they are, have your past and/or present jobs matched your values? If not, what affect did that have on you? Most importantly, how can your values lead you to the most suitable work in the future? I leave that question for your contemplation and discovery. If you need to, you can contact me to assist you through coaching services.

Go from KNOWING to GROWING - Achieve it with a Coach
posted Friday, July 17, 2009 4:50 PM
We all have a personal list of things we want to accomplish in our lives. When you think about it, you probably already “know” how to make those things happen. You could probably sit down with paper and pencil in hand and etch out action plans to make any one of them a reality, right? However, if you’re like most people, you still haven’t begun that process, even with your top priorities.
Your personal list might include one or more of these: · Find a new job · Keep your job and/or advance your career · Rethink your path in life · Further your education · Expand your business or personal network · Improve your relationship with important others · Create a budget and stick to it · Change your eating habits for the better · Strengthen your body · Sort and organize your work and/or living space · Replace worrisome thoughts with positive thoughts · Add more enjoyment to your life with hobbies, activities, etc. · Make time to explore and create so you can live YOUR life instead of someone else’s Now that you’re thinking of it, choose one of your personal goals and etch out an action plan. Include dates. Go ahead, experiment: One of my important personal goals is: These are the steps I know I need to take and complete by these dates: 1. First step, and by when: 2. Second step, and by when: 3. Third step, and by when: 4. (Add more steps and dates – you have the picture!) For strongly self-motivated, personally accountable people, this may be all it takes. They will seriously focus on their goals, define and complete action steps to accomplish what they want – consistently. Are you one of them? If so, congratulations, and you have earned the admiration of the rest of us! If you are not in that category, then maybe you could use some support in moving from KNOWING into GROWING toward who you want to become – support in the form of a professional coach. Coaches can help you grow into being more personally accountable to achieving your own priorities. More and more successful people employ business and/or life coaches to help them take steps to make their wish lists produce the realities they really want in their lives. Find out how it works. Talk with a professional International Coach Federation (ICF) certified coach about where you want to grow, and find out how you can start making real progress with your own personal list of priorities. ICF coaches are professionally trained and ready to support you. They will hold you accountable to YOURSELF in moving from “knowing” to “growing.” ________________________________________________________________________ Author Gayla Doucet - A Certified Creative Life and Talent Management Coach (International Coach Federation) and a member of the Phoenix Chapter of the ICF in Arizona. Go Ahead, Get Lost
posted Friday, July 3, 2009 3:03 PM
Have you noticed how slowly time goes when you’re doing tasks you’ve been avoiding as long as possible? For people like myself, a good example would be when it’s time to do the bills. It may take 30 minutes, an hour, whatever – and I consider it a necessary but annoying application of my time. I am aware of every second and can’t wait for it to end!
On the other hand, remember the last time you lost track of time? What were you “lost” in? Whatever it was, it probably was something you love to do, and restored your energy and enthusiasm for life, right? It can be many different things for different people. Here are some frequently cited hideaways that stoke people's happiness and creative energy: · Relaxing with a good book that captivates your imagination · Being with someone with whom you share a caring, respectful relationship · Playing, having fun, and laughing with a child or a pet or a friend · Losing yourself in the enjoyment of art, writing, music, or a hobby project · Listening to your favorite music and letting your mind wander with it · Appreciating nature and feeling the beauty of the world around you People differ widely in what captures their wholehearted attention and frees them from their bossy “to do” lists of mundane chores. What are your favorite escapes? This is seriously important to your well being and creative regeneration, so list 3 of them below: 1) (Your favorite, hands down!) _____________________________________ 2) (Your second favorite, a close runner-up) ___________________________ 3) (Your third favorite, and also very important) ________________________ Now that you have claimed them out in the open, answer this question: which ones are currently on your calendar, with their own appointments booked in among your long list of life’s commitments and tasks? If they’re not there, you’re like most people who habitually undervalue and postpone the pleasure of losing themselves in their favorite pursuits, day after day after day… until their creative energies run dry and they feel stuck. Want to keep your creative energy stoked and working for you fulltime? Then get lost more often, lost in doing something you love. Go ahead, add that appointment to your calendar now. You probably need it more than ever these days... Here’s to the power of creative life inside YOU! Old News? Dump it For Good!
posted Friday, June 19, 2009 9:46 AM
Old news is suffocating, sticky, and beginning to smell. It’s piled so high that you can’t see past it, and you are stuck behind it.
I’m talking about the bad stuff that happened to you yesterday, last week, years ago, sometime in your past. If you’re still dragging it out to rummage through it and relive it, then you’re giving it too much floor space in your life. Old news is occupying valuable space that could be used for storing stuff that makes your life more pleasant, like happy experiences, creative endeavors, new acquaintances, and fresh beginnings. But piles of old news will squeeze those things out the window. You have an old news “garbage” problem if you find you are constantly focused on reliving events like a job loss, a marriage breakup, a financial meltdown, an accident, and/or other unfortunate realities in your past. Although these events cannot be changed, they are actually over and out the back door. They don't define you today. BUT they can reenter and replay forever if you open the door and invite them back. The truth is, they’re tired – they just want to leave (not to mention your friends who have been listening to these stories over and over again...). Want to breathe fresh air? Then dispose of your old news before it suffocates you. Learn to see the good things in your present life, magnify them, and exercise your power to create your future the way you want it to be. A professionally certified Life Coach will help. Contact one of us - we're waiting for you. Identity theft?
posted Friday, June 5, 2009 12:35 PM
If you're like most people in our modern society, you're doing the best you can to attain or maintain a successful identity based on what you DO in your work and your career. Your career is typically what you use to identify yourself in your social life when you meet someone new and they start asking you questions. Usually, "What do you do" is one of the first questions, right? That's because others will most often use your career to identify, classify, and remember you.
"Allan... oh, yes! Allan the Accountant! I remember meeting him at that conference last month. I have his card somewhere in my files..." Nothing wrong with that. You probably want others to understand and remember what you do for a living in case they need your services or products. In many parts of the world, we are well accustomed to living in a consumer-based economy and trading consumables - like Allan and his accounting services. In your personal life, however, your identity is much more complex. All kinds of problems can arise when you forget this valuable fact and depend on your career as your main identity. Especially today, you could be at risk for a serious case of "identity theft" when your job ends or your industry shuts down and forces you to change careers. Then - WHO ARE YOU? You'll need to find the answers in order to reassemble the pieces of your identity and move forward. Life Coaches know that you are much more than your career identity. They can help you revisit your unique personal identity (including your many talents, strengths and possibilities) which you may not have thought about for a long time. When you focus on who you are inside as a unique individual, the inevitable changes in your work life no longer have the power to steal your identity. ---- Gayla Doucet's career identity: Certified Creative Life and Talent Management Coach (International Coach Federation) and a member of the Phoenix Chapter of the ICF. Your Life - Creatively Yours
posted Monday, April 20, 2009 3:20 PM
"I couldn't paint a picture to save my life!"
Sound familiar? I've heard far too many people disparage their innate creativity this way, haven't you? It's as if putting paint to canvas is the only measure of creativity there is. Don't get me wrong, I certainly admire the obvious creativity of visual artists in every medium. But I've also seen "art ingénues" pick up a paintbrush and produce beautiful pictures that no one else could have created but them. They may even surprise and delight themselves - if they are able to accept the evidence that they are, indeed, creative! Are YOU creative? Delete that question. The real question is: HOW are you creative? There are many ways people create. One we all share is the way that we uniquely create our experience of life everyday. This is evident in where you go (or don't go), what you choose to do, what you habitually think, how you feel, the way you react to people and situations, where you focus (past, present or future), and much, much more. There is a HUGE canvas of creativity open to you each day and night of your life - and you're selecting which paintbrush to use! How's it working for you? Your creative life also includes YOUR UNIQUE PROPENSITIES for paying attention to specific realms where "time stands still" for you - where you become lost in enjoyment and the euphoria of personal achievement. Here's a short list, some of which may appear more challenging than others - but small or large, all are evidence of unique creativity: Designing and planting a garden --- redecorating your home, --- restoring an old car --- pulling together a vacation package to match your dreams --- producing beautiful gourmet cuisine --- giving someone a special party to remember --- rethinking and reinventing your life's work --- preparing for and landing a job in a new industry --- restructuring your department and/or organization to meet new challenges --- beginning a sport you've never done before --- creating new personal art (writing, photography, music, visual art ) --- planning and moving into a retirement that excites you --- seeking new insights about life that result in you courageously expanding your limits. How do you express your creativity, and how's it working for you now? When you spend more time recognizing and enjoying your CREATIVITY, you become HAPPIER. When you are happy, you are empowered to pursue your dreams and create more of what you really desire your life to be. HOW are you creative? Find out. Look for and list your own creative realms where you find enjoyment. Focus on them, and remove obstacles from around them. If you want to accelerate this process, retain a Creative Life Coach. Coaching supports you in expanding your possibilities and getting the MOST out of your creative life. Your new beginning is calling

Life changes impact us all. They happen by accident, by choice, or as a result of a number of circumstances that evolve around us - like our world's current economic situation. Whenever changes appear in our lives, you can trust that they are always accompanied by opportunities for creating new beginnings. I like the late Louis L'Amour's inspiring quote: There will be a time when you think everything is finished. That will be the beginning." One reason life coaching has gained incredible momentum today is due to the accelerated rate of change in our world, and the urgent need for people to create new beginnings. Change requires people to work through unforeseen situations, rethink personal priorities, envision new goals, and take action to evolve. You can do this, but it helps immensely when you have an International Coach Federation (ICF) certified coach on your side. YOU have the POWER - a professional COACH can help.
Assess + Explore + Envision + Create = BECOME Redefine and recreate your future. It's time for all of us to do it.
