General Dynamics C4 Systems' Battle Management Systems Division designs, develops, and integrates highly sophisticated command, control, and communications systems for the U.S. military, federal agencies, civil governments and related international customers. These state-of-the-art, integrated systems combine advanced visualization software and multi-sensor inputs to provide near real-time situational awareness to tactical decision makers. Our engineers help transform large amounts of complex data into useful information that is clearly and intuitively presented to end users, enabling them to make better-informed decisions. We design and develop systems and software for a wide range of global missions including: battle command; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; airspace management; crisis and emergency management; peace keeping and contingency operations; drug intervention, and public safety.
The purpose of the Chief Software Engineer is to provide proactive leadership within the division's software engineering community focused on providing technical leadership for software development activities, continuous improvement of the organization's software development process, leadership in planning the next generation technology and tools, and development of staff needed in order to facilitate efficient execution of our current and future software programs. In addition to these responsibilities, support new business opportunities and proposals as they relate to software development. 1. Strategic and Tactical Leadership a. Provide long range planning for the next generation software development and test methodologies required to maintain our lead in the market place. b. Provide leadership in software technology roadmap planning at the business unit and division levels. c. Provide leadership in software related IRAD and ESP planning and execution. d. Collaborate extensively with external customers and partners, internally within the division and externally across GDC4S. e. Develop customer intimacy, understanding their needs, and communicating at the appropriate level of the varying degrees of technical knowledge. f. Is a thought leader and technical driver on proposals 2. Technical Leadership a. Oversee project-related software development activity to assure our software architecture and designs are technically sound, and we meet requirements and regulations. b. Provide leadership in software problem solving across the division. c. Monitor quality of and provide support for the software technical approach and cost/size estimates for software-related proposals. d. Provide guidance to ensure we conduct ourselves with integrity. 3. Staff Development a. Provide leadership in software technical staff development, through support of strategic hiring, mentoring, and by facilitating software staff training. b. Assist software task leaders with application and tailoring of standard development processes to maximize benefit to project performance. 4. Process Improvement a. Assess health and viability of division software engineering development performance. b. Provide innovative leadership in improvement of software engineering process and efficiency and in the projects? application of these improvements. c. Plan the next generation software technology and tools needed in order to facilitate efficient execution of our current and future programs. d. Work with other concurrent engineering disciplines within the division to help optimize overall project performance. e. Leverage software process improvement activities performed outside of the division into the organization through the leadership of the Engineering Process Group. BMSD is a geographically dispersed organization. The successful candidate can work out of the Orlando, Huntsville or Pittsburgh office. Travel will be required and may required extended durations in the support of proposal development or direct program support. The ideal candidate with have most of the following attributes: Education: BS degree in the field of Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering. An advanced degree is desirable. Experience: 12 years of demonstrated experience in the field of software engineering within DoD programs, with a wide background including: - Experience supporting the entire life cycle of a software development program - Experience developing and reviewing software engineering artifacts for critical mission systems - Solid foundation in software development architectures including Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) trends and approaches and object oriented designs and architectures. - Experience utilizing a structured development process (CMM-I for example) - Experience applying advanced principles of engineering to solve problems involving the development of complex technology and to clearly prese We Value Diversity!
